Once upon a time in a busy airport, there lived a small blue airplane called Pip. Pip was not a big jetliner; he was a small propeller plane.
One day, he saw some big jetliners fly across the oceans. Pip took passengers to nearby cities. "I wish I could fly just like the big jets", Pip sighed. His friend, an old cargo plane said, "size doesn't matter Pip. It's the strength of your wings and the courage in your engine that count."
That afternoon, a storm arrived. During that time, the flights have been delayed. The big jets were grounded but a small urgent package needed to go to a town over the mountains. The pilot looked at pip and said, "Look, pip its dangerous but I know you can do it!" Pip flew into the dark windy sky. He flew in the middle of rain and lightning. And then he went buzzzzz; the lightning that struck him. "Ahh! Help!" Said pip. "I am struck".
Right then, the old cargo plane came by his side and said, "Hey relax Pip. Tell me what's wrong".
Pip said, in fear, "I am struck by lightning. Am I going to crash?"
"Now pip calm down and take a look at your body", Said old cargo plane. Pip scanned his body by tilting from left to right then checking his engines and wings. He wasn't hurt anywhere. "I don't see any damage", said Pip. "Yes", said the old cargo plane. You have a wonderful equipment called a lightning rod.
What? A lightning rod! gasped Pip. "Of course", said old cargo plane. "If an airplane like you is suddenly struck by lightning, like it happened now, the lightning rod sends the shock out into the air. So the plane is not harmed." "But what about the passengers? Are they even safe?" asked pip.
"Lightning is very dangerous to passengers too, but you are the one who can keep them safe", said the old cargo plane. "Me?" asked Pip. "Yeah!" said cargo plane "you protect passengers". Pip was relieved.
Pip did it! He took a deep breath, continued his journey to the airport, his propeller spinning with newfound confidence as he levelled out his wings. With the old cargo plane flying steadily by his side, Pip pushed through the final gusts of wind, cleared the stormy mountain peak, and landed safely on the runway of the mountain town.
When the pilot stepped out with the urgent package, the townspeople cheered. Pip looked down at his bright blue wings, feeling a warmth inside his engine that had nothing to do with electricity. He realized he didn’t need to be a giant jetliner to do big and important things.
And he realized true friends don't leave when the going gets tough.
